Match preview

Valencia are eight-times Copa del Rey winners, most-recently beating Barcelona in the 2019 final, but could they be at risk of a shock exit here?

Gennaro Gattuso’s team have lost both La Liga matches since the resumption, beaten 2-1 by Villarreal and then, more shockingly, 1-0 at home by Cádiz.

Having won just one of their last eight, los Che have slipped down to 12th, eight points adrift the European positions.

Los Murciélagos were actually last in action in Saudi Arabia a week ago, taking on Real Madrid in the Supercopa de España semi-finals.

In fairness, Valencia were much-improved in that game, holding Real to a 1-1 draw, thanks to Samuel Lino’s equaliser.

What let los Che down was poor penalty taking, with Eray Cömert skying his effort miles over the crossbar, before José Luis Gayà’s effort was saved as they bowed out.

This though is likely to be a far sterner test.

Sporting de Gijón reached back-to-back Copa del Rey Finals in 1981 and ‘82, beaten by Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.

This season, having seen off Beasain, Numancia and Rayo Vallecano, los Rojiblancos are one win away from a first quarter-final appearance since 2009.

In league terms, Abelardo’s team are 15th in the Segunda División, following a 2-0 defeat at Racing Santander on Saturday.

Here, in front of a packed crowd at el Molinón, can Sporting Gijón knock out one of Spain’s biggest clubs?
