Mexico on the other hand lost just twice in qualifying despite rarely convincing under Gerardo Martino – there were narrow wins over Costa Rica, Panama and Jamaica and a draw against Panama – leaving question marks over their potential to compete in Qatar, despite a world ranking of ninth.
Their friendly against Peru kicks off a run of four games before the start of the World Cup, with Colombia, Iraq and Sweden all lined up to face Martino’s side as they prepare for their opener against Poland on November 22.
