Arsenal have made a major breakthrough in a bid to keep young star Reiss Nelson at the Emirates Stadium this summer, with a four year contract on the table for ther Englishman.
Nelson has largely been used as a substitute this campaign, but has continued to impress despite limited opportunities and scored a vital last gasp goal against Bournemouth that, had Arsenal won the Premier League, would have written him into folklore.
His 10 Premier League appearances this season have yielded 3 goals and 2 assists, but he has only totalled 171 minutes on the pitch, playing more than half an hour only once (against Nottingham Forest where he scored twice).
The Gunners were in danger of losing Nelson on a free transfer this summer, with the Englishman due to be out of contract this summer, and Nelson had already turned down several offers to stay.
The 23-year-old has been attracting attention from across Europe, with Brighton, AC Milan and Fulham all thought to be keen on signing him should he become available on a free transfer.
As per the Daily Mail, however, Nelson is now ‘expected to sign a new contract at Arsenal after a breakthrough in talks over an extension’, with Arsenal having offered him a ‘significant’ wage boost on a deal that is set to last four years, with the potential for a fifth year.
It comes as a major show in faith in the 23-year-old, who will now have a newfound importance to the Arsenal squad in the wake of his new deal, and is likely to spell the end of their hunt for a new forward this summer barring a major change in policy.
Though deployed often on the left, Nelson may become an alternative to Bukayo Saka, who featured in every Premier League game last season on the right flank.
