Liverpool have not been in great form ahead of the game and recently lost 3-0 to Brighton.
As a result, a tight clash was expected on Sunday afternoon.
And when all was said and done, the game ended with Brighton progressing to the next round.
Liverpool had the first decent chance of the game when Mohamed Salah saw his chance cleared off the line by Lewis Dunk.
Brighton had a chance of their own cleared off the line 14 minutes in, this time by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Liverpool then should have made it 1-0 after 25 minutes through Mo Salah. The winger was played in by Elliott on his favoured left foot but he dragged the effort well wide.
Liverpool’s lead did not last long, though, with Tariq Lamptey’s long-range effort taking a touch off Lewis Dunk and wrong-footing Alisson.
Despite Brighton’s goal, Liverpool continued to dominate into the second half. However, the Seagulls came close to adding a second 71 minutes in when March got on the end of a whipped cross but Alisson did well to get out and smother the shot.
Brighton then felt Liverpool should have had a man sent off late on when Konate brought down Mac Alister but nothing was given.
The Reds escaped another red card shout moments later when Fabinho hacked down Ferguson who needed lengthy treatment.
Brighton won the tie in injury time when a Gross free-kick was floated back across goal and into the path of Mitoma who controlled well and smashed past Alisson.
