There were plenty of goals on an entertaining evening in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United securing safe passage into the competition’s last eight.

Holders Liverpool progressed along with Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Newcastle, while Chelsea and Manchester City were dumped out.

Preston North End, the only EFL team left in the competition, also lost so set up an all-Premier League quarter-final.

Read our round-up below to see what happened on a thrilling night of football.

Brighton 2-3 Liverpool

Cody Gakpo scored twice as Liverpool continued their fine start to life under Arne Slot. Luis Duiz also found the net as the Reds edged past Brighton to march into the quarter finals.

The much-lauded Simon Adingra and Tariq Lamptey struck for Fabian Hurzeler’s side.

Aston Villa 1-2 Crystal Palace

Eberechi Eze scored but had to be replaced through injury shortly afterwards as Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace claimed an impressive win over high-flying Aston Villa.

Jhon Duran levelled for Villa but Daichi Kamada restored Palace’s lead to see Oliver Glasner’s side through.

Manchester United 5-2 Leicester City

Ruud van Nistelrooy cut a happy figure in the dugout as the interim Manchester United manager watched his side breeze past Leicester City at Old Trafford.

Casemiro found the top corner with a wonderful strike a quarter of an hour into United’s first game since sacking Erik ten Hag.

The Brazilian added a second before the half was out but not before Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes found the net for the hosts.

Fernandes got his second after the break to wrap up the game.

Bilal El Khannous and Conor Coady scored for Steve Cooper’s side.

Newcastle United 2-0 Chelsea

Newcastle avenged their Premier League defeat to Chelsea last weekend by dumping the Blues out of the competition to keep their dream of ending their long wait for a trophy alive.

Alexandar Isak and an Axel Disasi own goal within three first-half minutes did the damage for Eddie Howe’s team, while a much-changed Chelsea were beaten for the fourth time this season in all competitions.

Preston North End 0-3 Arsenal

The Gunners saw off plucky Preston, the only non-Premier League side left in the competition, courtesy of goals from Gabriel Jesus, Ethan Nwaneri, and Kai Havertz.

Nwaneri’s was the pick of the bunch, the 17-year-old continuing to bolster his growing reputation as he curled in his third of the competition with a sumptuous strike that flew into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Jesus’s goal was his first in 25 games as Mikel Arteta’s side eased into the next round.

Tottenham 2-1 Manchester City

Spurs enjoyed a memorable night as they progressed to the last eight, while City suffered their first defeat of the season.

Timo Werner and Pape Sarr scored for the hosts who held on despite Matheus Nunes halving the deficit just before half-time to keep their hopes of a first trophy since 2008 alive.
