Chelsea boss Graham Potter can rest a bit easy coming into the midweek program as the UEFA Champions League returns to action in the round of 16, with the Blues set to clash with German giants Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park in what should be a hotly contested two-legged affair against a Die Schwarzgelben who is in red hot form on the back of five straight wins in the Bundesliga.

The Blues brass remains supportive of Potter despite the nature of the current 2022-23 season as the club sits midtable despite spending over £600m this season under co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s Behdad Eghbali. With just one win in their last six fixtures across all competitions, Chelsea is in desperate need to change the script at what is a very difficult venue to travel to and extract all three points on a European night, but a goal will certainly do just fine with the second-leg still to come back at Stamford Bridge.

Predicted Chelsea XI

Chelsea Team News

  • Out: N’Golo Kanté, Armando Broja, Christian Pulisic, Édouard Mendy,
  • Doubt: Wesley Fofana, Denis Zakaria, Mateo Kovačić, Raheem Sterling

Graham Potter must still contend with a large contingent of senior figures in the Chelsea first-team still absent through injury for what will be a massive two weeks in terms of the club’s fortunes on the pitch in the Champions League this season, a mere two years after they lifted that same trophy under former boss Thomas Tuchel.

The usual suspects remain laid up in dry dock, while questions surround the availability of Denis Zakaria, Mateo Kovačić, and Raheem Sterling, with Wesley Fofana not expected to be fit enough to be included in the matchday squad on Wednesday night at Signal Iduna Park. Club academy product Trevoh Chalobah should also slot into center-back due to January signing Benoît Badiashile not being registered for the knockout stages.
