British boxing gets back under way in 2023 with the first significant fight of the year as middleweights Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Smith enter the ring at the AO Arena in Manchester.
It kicks off what could be another bumper year of boxing, with Tyson Fury considering another retirement U-turn with a fight against Oleksandr Usyk mooted for the first half of the year, while Anthony Joshua is eyeing up another redemption story having lost to the Ukrainian in August, a defeat which prompted a press conference breakdown from the former heavyweight champion.
It will be an overdue return to the ring on January 21 for Eubank Jr however, with the 33-year-old denied a highly-publicised bout with Conor Benn due to the latter’s adverse drug test results, setting up a meeting with former sparring partner Smith.
The fight could act as a springboard for either fighter, with Smith boasting a range of options in different weight divisions, while Eubank will be hoping it sets him up for high-profile fights with the likes of Gennadiy Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez, with Eubank even admitted his career could be in “dire, dire straits” with a loss.
