Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois says he will not play the Belgium national team while current head coach Domenico Tedesco remains in charge.
The 102-cap international has not formed a strong bond with the 38-year-old and had a public falling-out with him in 2023 after being snubbed as the nation’s captain following Eden Hazard’s retirement.
In a post on Instagram, Courtois said: “Unfortunately, following the events with the coach and after much reflection, I have decided not to return to the Belgian national team under his management.
“In this matter, I accept my share of responsibility. However, looking forward, my lack of confidence in him would not contribute to maintaining the necessary atmosphere of cordiality.
“The Federation, with whom I have had several discussions, accepts my position and the reasons that led me to this painful but coherent decision.
“I regret possibly disappointing some fans, but I am convinced that this is the best course of action for Belgium, as it closes a debate and allows the team to focus on pursuing its goals.”
Courtois was left out of Belgium’s Euro 2024 squad this summer despite returning from injury to start in Real Madrid’s Champions League win at Wembley.
The former Chelsea stopper had suffered two big knee injuries, keeping him out for almost the entire 2023-24 campaign.
Belgium were eliminated in the Round of 16 in Germany this summer, losing to France.
Courtois was replaced by Koen Casteels, who is playing his football in Saudi Arabia.
