Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has proved compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo correct with his latest comments over the importance of winning trophies at Old Trafford.

Prior to his unceremonious departure in November, Ronaldo identified Dalot as one of few players good enough to play for Manchester United. The veteran forward claimed that for the most part those at the club did not have the right mentality to succeed, but that the young defender did.

“In Manchester United I can mention Dalot, he’s young, but very professional but I don’t doubt that he’s going to have longevity in football because he’s young, he’s smart, intelligent and he’s very professional”, he told Piers Morgan.

And, ahead of his side’s League Cup quarter final tie with Charlton Athletic, the young defender has proved Ronaldo right, claiming that he and his teammates need to have an ‘obsession’ about bringing trophies to Old Trafford.

“It has to be an obsession for us to win trophies and to win things”, he explained. “This club is about winning trophies. It’s about being there to fight and to compete for every trophy.”

Meanwhile, Dalot is enjoying a strong season, having become Erik ten Hag’s first choice right-back and excelling at Old Trafford.

“We are in a position to say that we are negotiating and seeing how both parties will benefit, but it is no secret that I am happy to be here, so we will see how things go.”

“I love this club and I love to play for this club”, the defender added. “Progressively we are in a good direction as a team. For me, this is the most important part and hopefully individually I can continue to help the team as I am doing.”
