Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has given injury updates on three key members of his squad ahead of their fixture with Manchester United on Wednesday night.
The Magpies can guarantee their place above tomorrow’s opponents with a victory at Old Trafford, having ended the season in strong fashion with just one defeat in their last eight league matches.
Injuries to key players have been a common theme of the season for Howe, but the 46-year-old provided some positive news to supporters on the fitness of Callum Wilson.

Hope for Wilson?
Wilson missed Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend due to illness and missed training on Monday. While Howe could not guarantee his selection at Old Trafford, they will have their no.9 available for the final game of the season against Brentford.
“We’ll see, we haven’t seen Callum yet,” he said. “We’ll see if he’s available to train today. If not, he’ll be available for Brentford.”
Wilson has featured just 19 times in the Premier League this season, amassing nine goals from a total of 975 minutes on the pitch. His absence has been filled by the presence of Alexander Isak, who has scored 20 Premier League goals in 28 appearances.
Isak Fitness Test
However, Isak’s availability is also under scrutiny after he was withdrawn for Harvey Barnes in the 68th minute of their previous outing.
“It was illness but I don’t think it’s a serious illness,” Howe added. “He didn’t train [Monday] but we’ll see if he trains today. Fingers crossed he will.
“He wasn’t feeling 100% and I think you could see that. We knew on Friday that he was slightly under the weather.”
Fabian Schar Update
Meanwhile, defender Fabian Schar is also on the comeback from a hamstring injury that has sene him miss Newcastle’s last two games. Howe was coy once again on whether Schar would be in the squad to face Man United.
“He’s working his way back,” Howe said of Schar. “He’s in a mix at the moment between training and being with the medical staff. He’s making good progress from his hamstring problem so we’ll wait and see if he’s available.”
