Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic has resigned from the German club.

The head coach leaves just a few weeks after the Champions League final loss to Real Madrid.

Terzic joined Dortmund in May 2022 and finished second in his debut Bundesliga campaign.

He came so close to the title but lost out on goal difference to rivals Bayern Munich on the final day.

A statement from the club said: “Edin Terzic leaves Borussia Dortmund.

“The coach, who won the DFB Cup with BVB in 2021, finished runner-up in the 2023 championship and reached the 2024 Champions League final, asked BVB to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

“Borussia Dortmund agreed to the request after a joint discussion.”

Terzic was reportedly involved in a bust-up with defender Mats Hummels before the Champions League final after the player criticised his boss’ tactics.

The club were reportedly deciding punishments for both parties before Terzic offered his resignation.

Speaking after the announcement, Terzic said: “After the game at Wembley, I asked for a meeting with the club’s senior management team, because after 10 years at BVB – including five on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach – I feel that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline.

“Everyone close to me knows that this has been a very difficult decision for me to take over the last few weeks, but after intensive discussions, my fundamental feeling has not changed.”

Terzic is a lifeline Dortmund fan but their Champions League final run masked a poor season in Germany.

BVB finished fifth in the Bundesliga, their worst position for nine years and they were knocked out of the German Cup in the last 16.

They now have the summer task of finding a new head coach as they look to rival Bayern Munich and champions Bayer Leverkusen in 2024-25.
