England icon Gary Lineker says Frank Lampard should be considered as the next manager when Gareth Southgate does eventually depart.

Reports suggest the current head coach could depart at the end of Euro 2024 unless the Three Lions win it.

They most recently beat Switzerland in the quarter-finals, setting up a semi-final clash with the Netherlands on Wednesday.

And if they can get past the Dutch, they will face either Spain or France in the final on Sunday.

Lampard has been giving his insights on England all summer and has earned the praises of his fellow BBC colleagues, including Lineker and Micah Richards.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the latter said: “You know what I really enjoyed about tonight’s game? Frank’s analysis pre-game.

“We normally have around a minute and a half, two minutes maximum if it’s really something detailed, but Frank’s analysis was about three minutes and I was glued to it.

“You can tell he’s got something. He’s articulate, the way he explains points and you can tell there’s a manger there inside of him.”

Lineker agreed with his broadcast partner and went so far as to suggest he should be in the frame for the hotseat.

He added: “I think he’s [Lampard] been a bit unlucky in his managerial career in some ways.

“He gets it tactically and he’s Frank Lampard. I think this is Gareth Southgate’s last tournament whatever, whether we win it or not.

“But I wouldn’t disregard Frank. I think players would respect him immensely. If you’re going to go English. Who else? Eddie Howe?”

England will face the Netherlands in the semi-final on Wednesday in Dortmund.
