England vs Slovakia: Kane goal turns Euro 2024 game around in extra time

Captain Kane scored his second goal of the finals minutes after England had been on course for elimination

Euro 2024

Harry Kane headed England in front in the first minute of extra time as The Three Lions’ last-ditch rescue act took an extraordinary twist against Slovakia in the Uefa Euro 2024 round of 16.

Ivan Schranz had slotted the underdogs in front after 25 minutes in Gelsenkirchen and England had not produced an attempt on target until Jude Bellingham equalised with an acrobatic 95th-minute finish.

Bellingham goal keeps England at Euro 2024

Just when England fans were coming to terms with their team remaining in the tournament with one of the last touches of normal time, Kane headed in a cross by Ivan Toney – on for Phil Foden during second-half added time – to put them in front.

Schranz strolled through a fractured England defence to prod pastgoalkeeper Jordan Pickford and put his side on course for a first appearance in the quarter-finals.

England looked to be going out with barely a whimper, head coach Gareth Southgate waiting until the 66th minute to make his first substitution by bringing Cole Palmer on for Kieran Trippier.

Declan Rice hit a post with a fine long-range shot from near the edge of the penalty area but the team considered one of the favourites for the title were labouring badly against opponents responding resolutely to waves of pressure.

Kane goal vs Slovakia stuns underdogs

Kane’s goal was cruel on Slovakia, who had looked far from a side ranked 45th in the world despite some questionable theatrics as the game wore on.

Southgate shuffled his cards again to the sound of an increasingly irate England support, sending on Eberechi Eze for Kobbie Mainoo, who had replaced Conor Gallagher in the starting line-up.

Just when it looked as if England would need something spectacular, Bellingham obliged with a glorious strike, scoring for the second time at the finals following his winner in their 1-0 opening victory over Serbia.

England or Slovakia will face Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
