Erik Ten Hag has confirmed that his side will be on the hunt for new defenders this January, specifically at right back, this January ahead of his side’s return to Premier League action.

Speaking ahead of their clash with Nottingham Forest, the Manchester United boss explained that he was keen to have strong backups on either flank in the months to come.

“We need 2 good fullbacks [on the left and right] because we have a lot of games to come”, he explained.

This comes amid claims that Aaron Wan-Bissaka is free to leave this January amid interest from West Ham and Wolves. However, the Manchester United boss defended his right-back, and quashed suggestions he could leave this winter.

“It’s clear, he has a future,” said Ten Hag in his post-match press conference after their 2-0 win over Burnley.

“He had some good years here, but from the start this season he had lots of illnesses and injuries. From the restart on, he’s fit and he could train with the team, and you see him progressing. His fitness level is getting better and I’m really happy with his performance [against Burnley].

However, as per Fabrizio Romano, his form will not stop the Red Devils targeting another right back, amid links to dutch pair Denzel Dumfries and Jeremie Frimpong.

Manchester United are also targeting a striker this January following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, with Cody Gakpo one of those on the radar.

Asked about finding a replacement for Ronaldo this January, Ten Hag said “Yes but only when we find the right player.

“We do everything that is in our power, so I do research on every opportunity that comes. We do everything we can if that opportunity will be there.”
