Euro 2024: Germany call-up Emre Can to replace Aleksandar Pavlovic

Gemrany have handed a call-up to Emre Can after Aleksandar Pavlovic withdraws with tonsillitis.

Emre Can of Germany

Euro 2024 hosts Germany have handed Emre Can a call-up to replace Aleksandar Pavlovic.

The midfielder has been suffering from tonsillitis and will not recover in time for the tournament opener against Scotland on Friday.

Can will join the squad instead having recently captained Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final.

The former Liverpool man was not on the winning side at Wembley but will be hoping to have more success with his national team.

He has not featured in a Germany shirt since September 2023 having previously made his debut in 2015.

But now he is likely to add to his 43 caps and will dream of scoring his second goal on the national stage.

Bayern Munich midfielder Pavlovic was handed a first call-up back in March but missed the games against France and the Netherlands due to tonsillitis then as well.

He featured in Germany’s first warm-up game ahead of the home tournament but was absent in the 2-1 win over Greece on Friday.

Can was given the nod ahead of Leon Goretzka, who was surprisingly left out by Julian Nagelsmann.

The Germany head coach said: “We wanted another defensive midfielder in our squad and have therefore decided to call up Emre Can.

“He made it clear that he was excited and ready to join the squad right away.

“We wanted another player in the squad with experience and one that knows how to deal with pressure. He fits that profile nicely.”

Germany will feature in Group A alongside Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland.

The hosts open the tournament against Scotland before meeting Hungary and then Switzerland on 23 June.
