A lighting storm brought a temporary half to Germany’s Round of 16 clash with Denmark in Dortmund on Saturday night.

English referee Michael Oliver stopped the match after 35 minutes of the first half as a huge storm rolled in, leading the players off the pitch on safety grounds.

The game was deadlocked at 0-0 at the time, however Oliver had disallowed Nico Schlotterbeck’s early header from a corner after a foul in the build-up.

The players were led to the changing rooms at 8.38pm BST while heavy rain and then hailstones gave ground staff another headache and saw fans flocking away from the lower tiers closest to the pitch in order to find shelter higher up the stands.

The players eventually returned to the field for a five-minute warm-up shortly before play resumed at 9pm BST
