Nottingham Forest needed penalties to see off League One side Exeter after a 2-2 draw after extra-time in the FA Cup fourth round.

Josh Magennis gave the League One hosts an early lead after only five minutes after reacting quickest to stab home after stand-in Forest keeper Carlos Miguel fumbled the ball.

Their joy was relatively short-lived though as the Premier League high-flyers equalised through Ramon Sosa after some nice skill.

Then after 37 minutes, Forest were ahead through Taiwo Awoniyi’s stunning turn and curled finish which left goalkeeper Joe Whitworth with no chance.

But Exeter were back level in the second half when Magennis got his second of the game as his strike deflected off Wily Boly to find the net for what could eventually go down as an own goal.

A dramatic end to the 90 minutes followed as Ed Turns was shown a straight red for Exeter, before a lengthy stop due to an injury to Awoniyi before the game headed to extra-time, with the hosts keeping their opponents out to force penalties.

Exeter missed their second and third penalties to put Forest in control in the shoot-out, with their victory eventually confirmed by Neco Williams’ comfortable spot-kick to seal a fifth-round tie against Ipswich at home.
