Five Premier League teams were seeking to avoid upsets as the 2024/25 FA Cup third round continued with seven games on Sunday.

Fifth-tier side Tamworth were hoping for a huge underdog win at home to Tottenham, while fourth-tier Bromley – promoted last season – visited Newcastle.

Ipswich Town were at home to Bristol Rovers and Stockport County visited Crystal Palace as two League One teams chased shocks, and Southampton were at home to Championship club Swansea City.

Arsenal also took on Manchester United at Emirates Stadium in an all-Premier League tie. Here’s what happened, including scorers and highlights.

Arsenal vs Man United: Penalties decisive

Bruno Fernandes’ strike gave United the lead seven minutes after half-time, but the momentum appeared to be in Arsenal’s favour after Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card for the visitors two minutes before Gabriel fired in the equaliser.

United goalkeeper Altay Bayındır then brilliantly saved Martin Odegaard’s spot kick and repeated the trick against Kai Havertz in a shoot-out as Ruben Amorim’s side went through 5-3 on penalties after holding out for a 1-1 draw.

Tamworth vs Tottenham: Spurs survive scare

Tottenham named a strong side but had an uncomfortable afternoon at Tamworth’s 4,000-capacity Lamb Ground, only going ahead through Nathan Tshikuna’s scrappy 101st-minute own-goal.

Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson also scored in extra-time as Ange Postecoglou’s team secured a flattering 3-0 victory.

Newcastle vs Bromley: Magpies made to work

Twelfth-placed in League Two, Bromley enjoyed a spectacular start in front of more than 52,000 fans when Cameron Congreve won a header and scored from the rebound in the eighth minute.

Newcastle levelled eight minutes later through an excellent Lewis Miley strike, and William Osula also produced an eye-catching 61st-minute finish for his first goal for the club, sealing a 3-1 win after half-time substitute Anthony Gordon’s penalty.

Ipswich vs Bristol Rovers: Hosts hammer Gas

Having gone out at home to Maidstone United last season, Ipswich were clearly intent on avoiding another shock as Kalvin Phillips’ long-range strike put The Tractor Boys in front after 18 minutes.

Jack Clarke slotted in to double their advantage six minutes later and Jack Taylor fired the third and final goal of the game eight minutes from half-time, although the absence of Video Assistant Referee reviews until the fifth round may have rescued the midfielder from being ruled offside.

Crystal Palace vs Stockport: Eze goal wins it

England forward Eberechi Eze’s fourth-minute strike proved the only goal of the game as Palace made it nine games unbeaten outside of the EFL Cup.

Play-off chasing Stockport are now winless in five matches, although Isaac Olaofe was unfortunate to have his second-half shot kept out by an inspired Matt Turner save.

Southampton vs Swansea: Dibling at the double

Kamaldeen Sulemana’s deft first-time lob and Tyler Dibling’s tap-in put Southampton 2-0 up at half-time and on course for their first win in 12 matches.

Dibling capitalised on uncertain defending to add the final goal of the game after the break for the bottom side in the Premier League, although Joe Allen cracked a low shot against a post from the edge of the box for the Swans, who have lost their last three away.

Hull vs Doncaster: Rovers shock Tigers

Harry Clifton struck the winning penalty as fourth-tier Doncaster won a shoot-out 5-4 following a 1-1 draw at Championship strugglers Hull.

Luke Molyneux’s composed finish had put Rovers ahead six minutes after the break, but Gustavo Puerta equalised 10 minutes from the end of regular time, converting after Mason Burstow’s shot hit a post.
