Followers of the United States national team have taken to social media in their droves on Thursday evening, to make their frustrations very much known.
This comes after the decision to reappoint Gregg Berhalter as head coach for the Stars and Stripes’ quest to reach the 2026 World Cup was confirmed.
In an official statement released across the US’ website and social media platforms, it was announced that:
‘The U.S. Soccer Federation has appointed Gregg Berhalter to lead the U.S. Men’s National Team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup that will be hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico.’

Berhalter, of course, has considerable past experience on his country’s bench, having only departed his role as manager after four years in charge in December of last year.
Safe to say, however, that news of his imminent comeback has not gone down at all well with the United States’ supporter base.
With a ‘worldwide search process’ having only led back to the nation’s long-scrutinised former boss, though, an almost inevitable backlash has since quickly spread:
Inflated ego, off-field drama and childish gossip, stubborn tactics, favoritism in player selection… it’s like hiring the worst kind of youth coach 😑

You hired an outside firm to find a coach and circle back to Berhalter…. Peak US Soccer

Matt Crocker, you’re new around here. Well we already want you gone. Abysmal leadership and decision.

This team has so much potential going into the 2026 World Cup. They deserve a much better coach leading them. Really strange decision.
