Fenerbahce have confirmed they are in talks with Jose Mourinho with a view to making the experienced Portuguese their new head coach.

Mourinho has been out of work since being sacked by Roma in January but recently stated he was eager to get back into the game.

It seems that opportunity will arise in Turkey with Fener looking to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Ismail Kartal. Kartal’s contract was not renewed after Fener finished second behind Galatasaray in the Turkish Super Lig despite amassing 99 points and losing just one league game.

A club statement, made to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP), read: “Negotiations have started with José Mario Dos Santos Mourinho Felix for the position of coach.”

Should the deal be completed, Mourinho will be reunited with several former players including Edin Dzeko – who he managed at Roma before he was sold to Inter – and Fred, who he signed at Man United, while he will be only too familiar with 23-goal Michy Batshuayi who had a six-year spell at Stamford Bridge after Mourinho’s second stint at the Blues ended.

Mourinho had been linked with a job in Saudi Arabia and has agreed to appear on coverage of the UEFA Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Dortmund on TNT Sports coverage in the UK.
