Vinicius Jr

Real Madrid could be without winger Vinicius Jr for up to a month after the European champions revealed he had suffered a thigh injury.

The Brazil international played the full 90 minutes as Madrid cruised to a 3-0 win at Leganes last night, creating the opening goal for Kylian Mbappe.

But Madrid posted an update this morning, stating Vinicius Jr was struggling with an injury and reports in Spain suggest he could miss the remainder of the fixtures in 2024.

He is certainly out of Wednesday’s game at Liverpool in the Champions League and appears unlikely to play in the Intercontinental Cup final on December 18.

Vinicius Jr has suffered from thigh problems before but this problem was not discovered until after the game at Leganes.

Potential boost for Mbappe

It creates a headache for coach Carlo Ancelotti but potentially solves one as well as the obvious replacement on the left side of a three-man attack is Mbappe.

France captain Mbappe has been playing in a central role but will likely get the chance now to play in his preferred position.

If the reported timeline is correct, Vinicius Jr could miss as many as eight matches such is Madrid’s schedule prior to the winter break.

The weekend win at Leganes moved Madrid within four points of La Liga leaders Barcelona with a game in hand.
