Harry Maguire’s rotten time as Manchester United captain has continued this season, and now even his former teammates are beginning to doubt his suitability for the role.

The Englishman was appointed Red Devils skipper in January 2020 following the departure of Ashley Young, but has seen his performances for the side drop off significantly this season.

There was speculation that Rangnick may opt for handing Ronaldo the armband as Maguire’s replacement in February, but Rangnick was quick to shut those rumours down.

‘I have never spoken with any player about a change of captaincy. This has never been an issue. It is me who decides who is captain’, he told The Athletic.

‘Harry is our captain and he will stay captain until the end of the season.’

Former Hull teammate slams Maguire

Speaking to BeIn Sports, Ahmed Elmohamady has slammed Maguire’s suitability for the role, claiming that his personality is not strong enough to handle it.

‘Harry was with me at Hull and in my opinion, he doesn’t have the level to be the Manchester United captain’, the Egyptian fullback told the news station.

Man Utd need a player with a strong personality and I hope that the next manager will give the captaincy to Ronaldo if he stays. Ronaldo can handle this responsibility and pressure; however, Maguire can’t handle this pressure.’

Maguire’s former teammate went on to criticise his suitability for Manchester United at all, suggesting that perhaps he had found his level at Leicester.

‘Maguire performed really well with Leicester, a team that competes to be in the top six of the Premier League and maybe this is his level.’

‘He doesn’t have the level to play for the biggest team in the history of England.’

As the questions continue to swirl, Manchester United are on course to complete one of their most disappointing campaigns in recent memory with Maguire as skipper.

After that, there could well be a shakeup.
