When and where?

Friday, July 5

Spain v Germany (Stuttgart) – 5pm, ITV1

A real heavyweight clash as Luis de la Fuente’s side – the only team to come through their group with a 100 per cent record – take on the tournament hosts.

Germany started well with a 5-1 thrashing of Scotland but haven’t looked as convincing since. A last-gasp goal rescued a point against Switzerland while they benefited from some questionable VAR decisions in the 2-0 defeat of Denmark.

Portugal v France (Hamburg) – 8pm, BBC1

Cristiano Ronaldo v Kylian Mbappe as many will label it. And while they will be the central characters in the drama, there are many other leading lights that could steal the show.

Ronaldo’s tearful antics in the penalty shoot-out win over Slovenia drew plenty of criticism and there is no doubt the veteran striker needs a strong performance to continue justifying his place in the team.

Mbappe is the first name on the France team-sheet, face mask or no face mask. Les Bleus overcame Belgium in the last round but have yet to hit top gear.

Saturday, July 6

England v Switzerland (Dusseldorf) – 5pm, BBC1

Will the real England please stand up. Devoid of inspiration, Gareth Southgate’s men have limped to this stage, showing no fluency and very little attacking prowess. Jude Bellingham’s heroics saved the day against Slovakia but a repeat performance against a tournament-savvy Switzerland will surely mean elimination.

The Swiss were much too strong for defending champions Italy in the previous round and will head to Dusseldorf in confident mood.

Netherlands v Turkey (Berlin) – 8pm, ITV1

Not one to be missed with Turkey’s chaotic approach to every game resulting in great entertainment. Vincenzo Montella’s side were impressive in edging out Austria and they won’t fear the Dutch, despite their strong performance against Romania.

Cody Gakpo has been excellent for Ronald Koeman’s men and he will be the man Turkey have to keep quiet.
