Dinamo Zagreb have sacked Italy legend Fabio Cannavaro.
Cannavaro, the former Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid defender who lifted the World Cup with Italy in 2006, was appointed by Dinamo in December.
But his brief tenure saw Dinamo miss out on progression from the league stage of the revamped Champions League on goal difference, and they have fallen off the pace in Croatia’s top flight.
Dinamo are eight points behind leaders Hajduk Split with eight games remaining. They sit in third place, which would result in them entering the first qualifying round of the Conference League.
The 25-time Croatian champions have won the league in each of the previous seven seasons, and the loss of Champions League revenue that would come with missing out on eight in a row would be a huge blow to the club.
Dinamo won five of their 10 league matches under Cannavaro, drawing two and losing three.
“We would like to thank coach Cannavaro from the bottom of our hearts for his tremendous effort, commitment and friendliness,” Dinamo said in a statement.
“We wish him all the best on his future sporting and life journey.”
