Jorginho’s agent has spoken out about his client’s future following Chelsea’s recent sanctions.

Roman Abramovich was placed under sanctions by the UK government for being “associated with a person who is or has been involved in destabilising Ukraine and undermining and threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, namely Vladimir Putin, with whom Abramovich has had a close relationship for decades.”

As part of the sanctions, which are currently in place until May 31st, 2022, Chelsea are not able to make transfers or offer new contracts to anyone.

These sanctions have led to speculation that a number of players could look to move on now that the lucrative Roman Abramovich era coming to an end.

And given that Jorginho’s agent has spoken repeatedly about his client returning to Italy, Chelsea fans likely assumed the midfielder would be one of the first to leave.

However, when discussing the situation recently, Jorginho’s agent claimed that, if the situation at Chelsea is resolved and sanctions are removed, their priority will be to renew Jorginho’s contract: “We have a contract with Chelsea until 2023 and it is a particular moment for the club, where there are no negotiations, also because the market is blocked both in entry and in exit.

Chelsea’s contract situation

As Jorginho is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2023, a contract renewal does seem likely as you would assume the situation would be resolved in the next year.

Chelsea are unlikely to be as lucky with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, however.

The pair are out of contract this summer and though the sanctions currently expire on May 31st, it is not yet known if the UK government will extend them past the time the pair’s deals run out.
