Lionel Messi secured yet more football history on Saturday night, en route to guiding Paris Saint-Germain to another Ligue 1 crown.

Messi, and PSG, marked their return to action a short time ago.

In the knowledge that a solitary point would be enough to make their lead atop the French top-flight an insurmountable one, Christophe Galtier’s troops made the trip to relegation-battling Strasbourg.

And, when all was said and done, despite looking some way short of their best once more, secure a necessary draw is precisely what the evening’s visitors went on to do.

The aforementioned Lionel Messi set the scoring in motion at The Stade de la Meinau, combining with Kylian Mbappe before slotting a trademark left-footed finish into the far corner of the Strasbourg net:

Kevin Gameiro did go on to level things up for Strasbourg a little over ten minutes from time, in the process securing the hosts’ top-flight status for another season, but PSG ultimately held on, to seal a record-breaking 11th Ligue 1 title.

In addition, it saw that man Messi make yet more history.

As revealed in the aftermath of the clash, the Argentine’s latest goal marked his 496th across league play in Spain and France.

This is one more than long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo managed throughout his time in England, Spain and Italy, making Messi the all-time leader in goals scored in Europe’s top-five leagues.
