Argentina and Croatia faced off in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday evening.
Argentina were somewhat favourites heading into the game after seeing off the Netherlands in their last match.
However, Croatia made it to the final in 2018 after beating England and also took a huge scalp in the quarter-finals of this tournament when they beat one of the favourites, Brazil.
Messi headed into the game having scored 10 goals at World Cups throughout his career.
This meant that Messi needed just one more goal to overtake Gabriel Batistuta as Argentina’s top scorer at World Cups.
And he got that goal in the first half on Tuesday, slotting in a penalty after Julian Alvarez was brought down in the box.
This saw Messi reach eight assists in total at World Cups, two off the record currently held by Pele.
