Argentina faced off with Croatia in the semi-finals of the World Cup, with the winner set to meet France or Morocco on Sunday.

Croatia headed into the game having already toppled one South American giant this winter in the form of Brazil.

However, the 2018 finalists had no such look vs Argentina. Julian Alvarez won a penalty shortly after the half-hour mark, which Lionel Messi stepped up to score.

Messi was then running into the Croatia half before he was brought down and Alvarez picked up the ball.

The Manchester City man then ran the full length of the Croatia half before scoring.

And to cap off superb displays from both of the aforementioned players, Messi beat Josko Gvardiol before squaring the ball to Alvarez for an easy tap in.

Then, after assisting Alvarez for Argentina’s third goal of the game, it was revealed that Messi has set another record.

As per Opta, Lionel Messi is the first player to score and assist in three different games in a single edition of a World Cup since 1966.
