The man in question is Virgil van Dijk. Van Dijk is currently on international duty with the Netherlands, aiming to qualify for Euro 2024.
Their most recently outing saw the Oranje put three past Gibraltar on Monday evening.
But before that, the Netherlands were smashed 4-0 by France. Kylian Mbappe bagged a brace as the gulf in quality between the two nations was highlighted.
And now, Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman has been told to remove Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk as the nation’s captain.
Whilst working as a pundit for Omrop Fryslan, former FC Twente and Feyenoord manager Gertjan Verbeek said: “I think Van Dijk is a first class wimp. I would immediately take away his captain’s armband.
“He has to mean a lot more as a captain. He has to put things down. It happens to him. At one point he lets Lutsharel Geertruida drown and then he stands there after the first goal, like: blablabla. Where was he then?”
He said: “If you are 2-0 down after seven minutes, it will be a hell of a job. It’s very bad how we start here. Then you’ll be chasing the facts all evening. We will definitely have to look at this. It is difficult to analyse so soon after the game, but after seven minutes it is already done.”
This is not the first time Virgil van Dijk has come on for criticism this season, with Liverpool’s defence the subject of much debate and ridicule, especially in the first half of the campaign.
Van Dijk was previously compared to Premier League legends such as John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, but this campaign has shown those comparisons were premature to say the least.
