Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount is expected to miss more than a month with a hamstring injury.

The 25-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Chelsea with much fanfare in July 2023 on a deal worth up to £60m, however he has only made 23 appearances since, completing 90 minutes just once, in last season’s EFL Cup fourth round defeat to Newcastle.

After starting only five Premier League games during an injury-plagued maiden campaign at Old Trafford, Mount was picked by Erik ten Hag for the first two games of this season but was forced off at half-time in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Brighton.

United’s No7 posted a message to fans on social media on Thursday, saying: “During the last game I picked up a minor muscle issue. I’ve had it checked and it looks like I’ll be out for a few games.

“Leading up to and during pre-season, I worked hard to get my fitness back to where it needs to be and I felt re-energised, sharp and ready.

“I wanted you to hear it directly from me how frustrated I am, as I expect you are too. I will do everything possible to be back in the best shape and help the team.”

United host old foes Liverpool on Sunday (4pm) before the international break.

They return to action with a trip to Southampton on Saturday, September 14, but Mount, who has won 36 England caps, scoring five goals, is likely to miss that, the EFL Cup third round visit of Barnsley to Old Trafford the following midweek and the trip to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on September 21.

The start of United’s Europa League campaign may come too soon for him with a trip to Tottenham on September 29 and the visit of Aston Villa to Old Trafford on October 6 considered more realistic for a return to action.
