Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said he is yet to discover the extent of an injury to Rasmus Hojlund which forced the striker off shortly after scoring the opener in a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in California.

Hojlund beat 17-year-old defender Ayden Heaven with a surging arrowed run from midway inside Arsenal’s half before slotting United ahead after 10 minutes in the pre-season friendly between the Premier League teams at the SoFi Stadium.

The Denmark international left the pitch looking downcast around five minutes later, having suffered an apparent hamstring injury.

“We have to wait over 24 hours – then we will hopefully know more,” said Ten Hag, praising Hojlund’s goal. “In such occasions he is very strong and he is a threat for every defence. He has [those] scoring abilities.”

Hojlund scored 16 goals after signing from Atalanta for £72 million last August but missed seven games through injury in 2023/24.

Leny Yoro injury

There was a further worrying development for Ten Hag when Leny Yoro, who joined United from Lille for £52 million 10 days ago, had lengthy treatment later in the first half before also being withdrawn.

“We were very careful, especially with Leny,” said the Dutchman. “It is disappointing he had to come off but let’s be positive and see what comes out.”

Man United injuries

The 45 separate injuries suffered by United last season were the most by any Premier League team, according to Premier Injuries.

Only Tottenham lost more players to issues than the 21 affected at United, with only five clubs losing players for more total days.

Manchester United US tour

Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli struck as Arsenal prevailed 2-1 against United on their US tour, although the Red Devils won a penalty shoot-out, Jadon Sancho scoring the decisive spot kick.

United face Real Betis in San Diego on Thursday (3am BST) and Liverpool in South Carolina on Sunday (12.30am) before returning to England to meet Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 10 (3pm).

They begin their Premier League campaign at home to Fulham on August 16 (8pm), when they will hope to avoid a repeat of their last-gasp defeat to the Cottagers at Old Trafford in February.
