Manchester United headed into the game looking to win their first trophy under Erik ten Hag and their first piece of silverware since 2017.
Newcastle, meanwhile, were looking to win their first trophy in 69 years.
And when all was said and done, Manchester United lifted the trophy.
Both sides had a lively start to the game, with Newcastle’s pace causing issues for United on the counter. Diogo Dalot was shown a yellow card after just nine minutes for a foul on Saint-Maximum.
Wout Weghorst had the first shot on target 13 minutes in but it was an easy save for Karius.
Newcastle’s first chance came 31 minutes in after Saint-Maximum beat Dalot and forced a good save out of David de Gea before Bruno Guimares fired over.
Weghorst nearly added a third in first-half injury time but his long-range effort was saved by Karius.
United went in at the break 2-0 up and Erik ten Hag opted to bring on Aaron-Wan-Bissak for Dalot, who was already on a booking. Eddie Howe, meanwhile, brought on Alexsandr Isak for Sean Longstaff.
The North East outfit went on the dominate for much of the second half, forcing Ten Hag to bring on two central midfielders for Fred and Weghorst. This allowed Rashford to go up front and give United a much-needed outlet on the counter, with the Red Devils going on to see out the tie with a 2-0 lead.

Almost felt bad for Karius before I remembered he wraps up here and goes home to Diletta Leotta.
