Manchester United have confirmed Dan Ashworth is clear to start work as sporting director.
Ashworth, 53, had been on gardening leave since Februrary after informing Newcastle of his desire to be part of the new project under Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS.
The former FA and Brighton chief had been take Newcastle to court in order to resolve the impasse over his switch.
But the matter looks to be resolved, with Ashworth ready to start work at Old Trafford.
A joint statement said: “Newcastle United and Manchester United have reached an agreement for the immediate release of Dan Ashworth from his contractual obligations at Newcastle United.
“The terms of this agreement remain confidential between the clubs.
“Newcastle United thanks Dan for his services and wishes him well for the future.”

Ashworth will form part of a revamped boardroom at United, with ex-Southampton chief Jason Wilcox arriving as technical director and former Manchester City senior official Omar Berrada poised to become chief executive.
Manager Erik ten Hag had been expected to take the brunt of a disappointing Premier League campaign in 2023-24 which saw the Red Devils finish eighth – albeit they did win the FA Cup.
But after talks with other managers reportedly broke down, the Dutch boss will remain at Old Trafford with talks over a new contract said to be underway.
