It is a massive tie for both teams with a spot in the Champions League next season potentially on the line.
Newcastle were 4th with 56 points heading into the game, whilst Tottenham were 5th with 53 points. And as Spurs have played one more game than the Magpies, they really need a win to keep their top-four hopes alive.
However, Tottenham’s hope of gaining some ground on the top four had gone out the window with just nine minutes played.
Newcastle took less than a minute to score on Sunday. Joelinton cut inside with ease before his parried shot fell to Jacob Murphy who smashed his shot past Hugo Lloris.
The Magpies doubled their lead four minutes later with Joelinton the scorer on that occasion. Newcastle made it 3-0 after just eight minutes. Jacob Murphy unleashed a long-range effort, which left Lloris planted.
Following Murphy’s strike, it has been revealed that Newcastle are only the sixth side in Premier League history to score three goals within the opening 9 minutes of a Premier League match, and the first since Manchester City vs Burnley in April 2010.
This saw the North East outfit make history, becoming the second-earliest side in Premier League history to take a 5-0 lead, after Manchester City vs Watford in September 2019.
