Newcastle United are keen to make at least one more signing before September’s transfer deadline and have earmarked players at two of their Premier League rivals as fitting the bill.
The Magpies enjoyed a famous opening day win as they thrashed Aston Villa 5-1 at St James’ Park to move top of the Premier League, and with Champions League football returning to Tyneside this season after a 20 year wait hopes are high for Eddie Howe’s side.
However, they have not been as active in the transfer market as they might have wished. So far, Sandro Tonali has arrived from AC Milan while they have raided the Championship for Harvey Barnes from Leicester City and Tino Livramento from Southampton, though they did also sign Anthony Gordon in January of last season.

Nonetheless, there are hopes that more will arrive, but the Magpies are working within tight financial fair play parameters. Speaking after the victory over Aston Villa, Howe explained that “I’d love one more player… and I think then we would have the ideal depth at the moment, with the injuries that we currently have”.
However, he added that his side ‘may have to be creative’ to avoid overspending.
To that end, the Telegraph report that Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney are catching the eye of the Magpies. Both players are thought to be free to leave their respective clubs after falling down the pecking order in London, with Tierney having long been linked with a move to St James’ Park.
