Spain midfielder Pedri will play no further part in Euro 2024 after sustaining a sprained knee in yesterday’s extra-time win over Germany.

The Barcelona star was caught by a wild challenge from Toni Kroos early in the quarter-final clash in Stuttgart and had to limp off after eight minutes to be replaced by Dani Olmo.

A statement from the Spain camp today confirmed the news that Pedri is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines, although he will remain in Germany with his team-mates. Luis de la Fuente’s men will face France in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

The statement read: “After the tests carried out on Pedri, the player has suffered a grade 2 internal lateral sprain in his left knee.

“He will remain with his team-mates until the end of the current tournament and focus on the battle at Euro 2024.”

It’s another blow for Pedri, who has suffered with terrible injury problems over the past two seasons. He is now set to miss pre-season with Barca and the start of their La Liga campaign, which commences on August 17 at Valencia.

As part of his farewell message on Instagram, Kroos, who is now retired following Germany’s exit, apologised to the 21-year-old.

He wrote: “It’s very important for me to apologise to Pedri, get well soon. Obviously, it was not my intention to hurt you. A speedy recovery and all the best. You are a great player.”
