Tottenham thrashed Hearts 5-1 in their first pre-season friendly ahead of the Premier League season.

Spurs were comfortable winners in their first run-out of the summer at Tynecastle, with big hitters Heung-min Son, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski in action alongside new signing Archie Gray.

Brennan Johnson opened the scoring for the North Londoners in the 39th minute before Ange Postecoglou fielded a completely different XI for the second half.

Lawrence Shankland levelled the game early after the break but Spurs’ fringe players quickly asserted their authority during a dominant display in the second half.

They were back ahead through Will Lankshear, 19, on 55 minutes before 16-year-old Mikey Moore scored Tottenham’s third 10 minutes later.

Djed Spence, who spent last season on loan at Genoa, added his side’s fourth before a late Lewis Neilson own goal completed the rout in Edinburgh.

Tottenham face Queens Park Rangers in a friendly on Saturday before jetting off to South Korea for the rest of their pre-season tour.

Villa kick off pre-season with a win

Morgan Rogers scored twice as Aston Villa returned to action with a 3-0 over neighbours Walsall.

Like Tottenham, Unai Emery fielded different XIs in each half, with January signing Rogers filling England star Ollie Watkins’ absence with a clinical brace in the first half.

Summer signing Ross Barkley’s quick-thinking led to a tidy finish from the 21-year-old to open the scoring on 22 minutes.

Rogers then claimed his second on the turn from the corner to send the Villans into half-time with a healthy advantage.

The second half saw new signings Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling Junior get their first run-outs, while Leon Bailey also got his first action since taking part in Jamaica’s Copa America campaign.

A quiet second period followed but Villa fans were given another chance to celebrate when Louie Barry finished off Iling Junior’s ball across goal for a third.
