The monarch was Queen for almost a lifetime, ascending to the throne in 1952, but died following a short illness in her Scottish home of Balmoral, surrounded by her relatives, who made the trip up to Scotland earlier in the day.
The Crown will now pass to Prince Charles, who will be known as King Charles III.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon”, a statement from the Royal family announced.
“The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
It is expected that sporting fixtures across the country this weekend will be postponed, with an update to be provided by DCMS and the Premier League on Friday morning.
