Real Madrid ended a three-match winless streak and went level on points with Barcelona at the top of LaLiga with a 2-0 victory over Girona.

Los Blancos, who had seen their grasp on the title slip away after losing to Espanyol before draws against Atletico Madrid and Osasuna, returned to winning ways in style with a commanding performance at the Bernabeu.

Appearing at home days after dumping Manchester City out of the Champions League, Real went ahead just before half-time through veteran midfielder Luka Modric, who rolled back the years with a stunning long-range strike.

After a corner was cleared, the 39-year-old chested the ball down and let fly with a stupendous effort which flew into the top corner to give his side a crucial lead.

Real remained the dominant side in the second half before Vinicius Junior put the game to bed in the 83rd minute by running onto a through ball by Kylian Mbappe before poking the ball past the goalkeeper.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side now sit level on points at the top of the table with leaders Barca, who were 2-0 winners at Las Palmas on Saturday. Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, are one point back in third in what is shaping up to be an exciting title run-in.
