Wayne Rooney began his reign as Plymouth boss with a resounding 4-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

Argyle, who appointed the former England captain in May, were well beaten in their Championship opener at Hillsborough as the hosts strolled to victory.

Debutant Jamal Lowe gave the Owls a deserved lead in the first half, finishing off a fine team move by Danny Rohl’s men.

Lowe was then heavily involved in the second after the half-time break as his header deflected off Brendan Galloway and into the net.

Josh Windass added a third with a powerful strike inside the box after a cut-back by Anthony Musaba from the byline.

And Rooney’s misery was compounded in added time when substitue Michael Smith when he converted from close range to make it four.

Wednesday could easily have scored plenty more as Rohl’s men had 30 shots on goal, with Plymouth barely registering a meaningful attempt on goal.
