The 2022-23 Premier League season is, once again, make or break on the south coast as Southampton are once more in a fight for their lives at the top of the English footballing pyramid, with Saints sitting bottom of the league with over half the campaign in the books. But a fantastic result at Stamford Bridge against struggling Chelsea showed what the club can do with its back against the wall, with interim manager Rubén Sellés looking to throw his name in the hat to succeed Nathan Jones at St. Mary’s Stadium in due course.
After the 1-0 win in the capital, a clash against fellow struggling outfit Leeds at Elland Road provides another proving ground for the club during a relegation six-pointer that should showcase two sides desperate for three points. Should Saints win, while receiving help in other weekend results, the notion that they could climb outside of the bottom free, even if only temporarily, is all the motivation they need.

Rubén Sellés will be looking to build on his side’s massive win against Chelsea last weekend and will be thankful for the fact that he won’t have much to change when it comes to a player personnel standpoint.
Che Adams may be available dependent on a late assessment after missing out against the win over the Blues, and his reintroduction into the squad would at least afford Sellés added tactical flexibility. The absences of Juan Larios, Tino Livramento, and Alex McCarthy remain, however, though that changes little of the overall picture given Livramento failing to appear all season and Larios appearing just five times for a shade over 150-minutes of action.
