Dani Olmo’s second goal of Uefa Euro 2024 gave Spain a second-half lead against France and broke the deadlock in a heavyweight quarter-final in Stuttgart.

Substitute Olmo – on after seventh minutes for injured midfielder Pedri – met Lamine Yamal’s low pass with a ruthless finish to put La Roja on course for the semi-finals.

Dani Olmo goal ‘beautiful’

“Look at the timing of the run,” said former Scotland striker Ally McCoist, commentating on ITV Sport. “He comes late, times it perfectly.

“[Robert] Andrich can’t do anything about it because there’s no time to react. It’s a beautiful finish; what a lovely goal.”

At 16 years old, Barcelona winger Yamal became the first teenager to record three assists at a single edition of the Euro or World Cup.

The prodigy eclipsed Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo’s feat at Euro 2004, when the future Selecao captain set up two goals across the tournament.

Germany vs Spain: Hosts ‘switched off’

McCoist was less impressed with Jonathan Tah and David Raum on the left side of the hosts’ backline. “I just think the Germans switched off defensively for just a second,” he said.

“Tah and Raum didn’t communciate, didn’t close him down and allowed him to play the ball perfectly.”

Spain had the better of an absorbing first half in which both teams struggled to use promising opportunities to telling effect in a hugely anticipated game.

Alvaro Morata spurned a fine chance for the three-time champions within two minutes of the restart, scooping a shot over the crossbar from close range.

Germany won their group courtesy of a last-gasp equaliser in their closing group-stage match against Switzerland before beating Denmark 2-0 in the round of 16.

The winners of the game will play Portugal or France in the semi-finals in Munich on July 9.
