Southgate has now taken charge of three major tournaments with England.
The Three Lions reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia before being knocked out by Croatia – it was England’s first semi-final appearance at a WC since 1990.
England then made it to their first ever European Championship final in 2021 before losing to Italy on penalties.
And now, in 2022, Southgate’s England were knocked out of the Word Cup by France at the quarter-final stage.
Despite going out so soon, England’s performance vs France was one of the best fans have seen for some time and they were very unlucky to lose.
But whilst the display vs France has turned some fans onto the side of Southgate, his future remains up in the air.
“I’ve found large parts of the last 18 months difficult,” Southgate told reporters. “For everything that I’ve loved about the last few weeks, I still have [to think] about those 18 months.
“What’s been said and what’s been written, the night at Wolves [losing 4-0 to Hungary], there are lots of things in my head that’s really conflicted at the moment, so what I want to make sure if it’s the right thing to stay, is that I’ve definitely got the energy to do that.
“I don’t want to be four or five months down the line thinking I’ve made the wrong call. When I’ve been through the past few tournaments my emotions have been difficult to really think through properly in those following few weeks.”
