Chelsea will need to pick a new captain next season with Cesar Azpilicueta on his way out of the club.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Azpilicueta has agreed personal terms with Inter Milan and could have his contract terminated by Chelsea in order to ensure a deal goes through. The Spaniard signed a two-year extension last summer so still has one year left on his current deal.
But Mauricio Pochettino will now have to decide who in his very young squad will replace the defender as captain.
If Azpilicueta leaves, Thiago Silva will become the only first team player over 30 with only four players remaining aged over 25.
And as per football.london, Silva may well now have to take up a new role in the squad. As vice-captain following the January departure of Jorginho to Arsenal, the Brazilian has taken the armband consistently since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020 and will likely be a leading candidate to do the job full-time.
Silva himself is on a short contract and is expected to call it time on his career in the near future but Chelsea have few other experienced options to call upon now N’Golo Kante has left and Matteo Kovacic is on his way out.
