Manchester City headed into the game in desperate need of three points.
Arsenal lost to relegation-battling Everton on Saturday, meaning City could temporarily close the gap at the top of the table to two points with a win over Spurs.
And when all was said and done, Spurs came away with the win.
Manchester City had the first chance 4 minutes in when a corner found Nathan Ake free at the back post but he chose to put the ball back across goal, instead of trying to score himself.
However, despite City having 83 per cent possession in the opening 13 minutes, Tottenham took the lead. Rodri’s pass to Lewis was intercepted by Hojbjerg. The Dane then found Kane whose effort bobbled past Ederson.
Tottenham grew into the game after the goal whilst Man City continued to ignore the countless runs Erling Haaland was making.
The second half began with Manchester City struggling to break down Spurs and the home side looking to hit Pep Guardiola’s men on the counter and exploit their left flank.
Kevin De Bruyne was then finally brought on around the hour mark to try and provide Haaland with some much-needed service. This saw Mahrez taken off and Silva moved out right.
The game opened up in the final 25 minutes with both sides having decent chances to score the second goal.
Cristian Romero was then shown a second yellow card for a foul on Jack Grealish in the 86th minute but Tottenham held out for the win.

Match reaction
Very rare you see a Pep team attacking with 4 on the last line instead of 5. But Bernardo’s role in front of Lewis-Rodri is meaning we are seeing that at times. Grealish-Haaland-Álvarez-Mahrez front 4. He wants Bernardo infiltrating those pockets behind the Spurs double pivot.
