Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Ross Barkley from Luton on a permanent deal.

Barkley enjoyed an impressive season in the Premier League for the Hatters despite their relegation, making 32 appearances and scoring five goals.

But after they suffered relegation, Barkley has opted to remain in the Premier League with Villa, who he spent a season on loan with in 2020-21.

The 30-year-old’s form last season led to talk of a recall for England, who he has represented 33 times but not since 2019.

Villa qualified for the Champions League under Unai Emery last season and Luton boss Rob Edwards said the opportunity was too good for Barkley to turn down.

Edwards told the club’s website: “Playing in the Premier League is important for Ross, as is Champions League football.

“He still wants to play for England and believes this gives him the best chance to do so.

“It was great to work with him for a season,” Edwards told the club website.

“He was amazing, provided lots of good memories for us all and the supporters fell in love with him, but I’m sure everyone will understand the opportunity.”

Barkley is Villa’s fifth signing of the summer after tying up deals for Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea from Juventus earlier on Monday.

On Friday, they completed the signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea and Lewis Dobbin from Everton.

Barkley will help to fill the midfield void left by Douglas Luiz, who departed for Juve on Sunday.
