The Daily Telegraph report that Arsenal have joined the race for Kai Havertz and the Gunners could look to act if Chelsea lower their asking price for the 23-year-old.

Chelsea are willing to sell the German forward this summer as part of their squad overhaul following a dismal campaign, though the Blues want to recoup a huge chunk of the £75m they paid Bayer Leverkusen for his services three years ago.

Real Madrid have been leading the race for Havertz as part of their plans post-Karim Benzema, but there are now suggestions that Arsenal could be tempted to launch a shock move for the player.

Unless Arsenal are able to negotiate Chelsea down to a very low fee, moving for Havertz does seem like a strange decision from the north Londoners.

If he joined Arsenal, Havertz would likely be used behind the striker in the no.10 role. But this spot currently belongs to Martin Odegaard, who is now Arsenal captain and is coming off the back of a superb campaign.

And as Arsenal need to prioritise other areas of their squad this summer – namely midfield and centre-back – a move for Havertz does seem like a waste of funds.
