Chelsea are set to complete the £12m signing of wonderkid goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina from Chicago Fire, it has been reported.
The Evening Standard claim that the 18-year-old was given the go-ahead to fly to London, complete a medical and sign the paperwork on Sunday morning.
Slonian will be Chelsea’s third signing of the summer window following the capture of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City and Kalidou Koulibably from Serie A outfit, Napoli.
Real Madrid and Wolves were also said to have shown interest in the shot-stopper, but he is now set to become a Blue before being sent back out on loan to Chicago to finish off their current campaign.
Slonian heads back to American with 10 clean sheets already notched for Chicago this term. And he is able to break the MLS record for the most clean sheets in one campaign if he can garner a further seven in the 11 games remaining of the campaign.
Following the close of the MLS season at the end of this year, Slonina could join up with the Chelsea squad on January 1 where his future will be assessed depending on the status of the club’s other goalkeepers.
Should that happen, you would assume it would be much more likely that Slonina sticks around in the English capital from January.
