The 20-year-old former Molde Fotballklubb standout has dropped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge after a January arrival from the Norwegian giants, with minimal minutes provided in the English capital serving as motivation to get back on track in 2023-24.
Fofana will spend the entire 2023-24 season with Die Eisernen under beloved Union manager Urs Fischer, who famously guided the club to a fourth-place finish in the German top flight in 2022-23 which saw them qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history.
The summer acquisitions of both Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson would have no doubt make minutes hard to come by in West London on account of the Blues having no European football on offer this season. The club is also still carrying Belgian all-time leading goalscorer Romelu Lukaku on the wage bill at current, which offers a fair few roadblocks in his pathway to time on the pitch after he made just three league appearances last season.
