Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has been given yet another chance to get the best of bright young talent on England’s south coast at the AMEX after the Seagulls extended the contract of highly-touted youngster Jeremy Sarmiento.

The 20-year-old Spanish-born Ecuadorian international is the latest gifted young talent to break into the senior setup at Brighton, whose policy of recruitment surrounding long-term potential has seen the likes of Moisés Caicedo, Evan Ferguson, Julio Enciso, and Facundo Buonanotte shining through in the last two seasons.

A five-year extension for Sarmiento should dictate that the former England youth international is set for increased involvement in 2023-24 under De Zerbi after only featuring in ~200min of Premier League action up to this point.

Despite that, he has been a bright spark as a substitute on numerous occasions, with the youngster bagging his first league assist last season in February during a 1-0 win against Brighton before an unfortunate metatarsal fracture saw him miss the final 13 fixtures of the campaign.

That injury did not deter owner Tony Bloom and the club’s brass from viewing Sarmiento as a gem in the making, and given his tactical versatility surrounding his ability to slot along the front three, the next step of his development surely beckons.
